First trip to Pakistan: a practical planning guide
Cities

The first useful cut is geographical. Lahore, Karachi and Hunza do not form a convenient triangle; adding all three to a short trip converts days into airport transfers and weather anxiety. Choose one city pair or one city plus one northern region.

Do the changeable work first

Check entry rules with Pakistan’s relevant mission for your passport, then read your government’s current travel advice before booking. As of September 2026, UK advice warns against travel to several areas and routes; those boundaries can change. Insurance must cover the places and activities you actually plan. A social-media itinerary is not evidence of cover.

Consult a travel-health professional early. The CDC’s Pakistan page recommends reviewing routine and destination-specific vaccines and notes risks that vary by location and elevation. Carry prescriptions in original packaging and confirm whether any medicine is restricted.

Build a route that can lose a day

Domestic flights and mountain roads are vulnerable to weather and disruption. Put a buffer before an international departure. Avoid overnight road schedules designed only to save hotel money. Agree driver hours, vehicle, seat belts, fuel, stops and the right to decline unsafe progress.

  • Keep digital and paper copies of key documents separately.
  • Carry more than one payment method; cash access varies.
  • Use an eSIM or locally compliant SIM plan and share a daily check-in.
  • Ask before photographing people, homes, checkpoints or religious activity.

Hospitality can make a crowded plan even fuller. Leave unscheduled meals and say no kindly when rest is needed. Pakistan rewards attention more than collection: two places understood are a better first trip than six places crossed off.

Prepare for ordinary friction

Save addresses in Urdu and English where useful, learn the names of neighbourhood landmarks and confirm airport pickup away from public social posts. Dress for heat, dust, worship spaces and air-conditioned interiors with layers rather than one supposedly universal outfit. Drink safe water and use food-safety judgement suited to your health. Discuss political conversations and photography with humility; being of Pakistani heritage does not automatically make a visitor locally informed. Keep family hosts aware of independent plans, but do not outsource every safety decision to relatives who may not know current tourist logistics.
