What the runway owed the street this season

A runway is allowed to be extra. A business is not. After the last round of shows in Karachi and Lahore, we traced twelve hero looks into production. Four arrived in a form a person could wear on Zamzama, in Gulberg, or to an office that still has a dress code. The rest stayed as content: feathers, trains, shoes that cannot do a brick path. Theatre has a job. It should not be mistaken for the season. The street already voted, in cotton and in sneakers, while the lights were still up.

The four that shipped

A cropped waistcoat over a long shirt. A sari with a stitched petticoat that does not require a team. Menswear trousers with a drawstring hidden inside a formal waistband. An embroidered jacket meant to sit over jeans. Those four had a path from light to till. We saw versions on the street within a month.

The rest involved feathers, trains, and shoes that cannot do a brick path in old Lahore. They did their job: they got photographed. A model holding a garment so it does not trip her is not a design. It is a warning. Count how many looks need a hand.

How to watch a show like an editor

Ignore the first and last look. Count how many pieces have pockets, and how many models can walk without holding the garment. That is the collection. Nadia, who runs a Karachi showroom, watches from the side with a notebook of what she can actually hang.

Bridal week and ready-to-wear week have collapsed into each other. A lehenga on a runway is allowed. A ready-to-wear show that is secretly a bridal dump is a category error. Occasion does not get you through a Tuesday in Clifton. The street already has a Tuesday uniform.

Lawn, denim, and the debt to the sidewalk

Lawn season is still the country’s real fashion week, whether the runways admit it or not. The prints that work are the ones a woman can wear to a market in Liberty and to an Eid visit without feeling costumed. Denim, cut wider and lighter, showed up on more sidewalks than catwalks.

We are not asking runways to become modest, or street, or office. We are asking them to send a few looks that can leave the building: a jacket over jeans, a waistcoat that buttons on a real chest, a shoe that can take a brick, accessories that do not need a handler.

• Ignore the first and last look. The collection lives in the middle.
• Ask, in the showroom, which runway piece is actually in production.
• If the model needed a hand to walk, you will need a life you do not have.

Karachi heat, Lahore tents, two climates of show

A Karachi show that ignores humidity is a fiction. Fabrics that cling under lights will cling worse on Zamzama. A Lahore tent that ignores dust is also a fiction. The houses that looked serious had tested cloth in the actual air, not only in a cold rehearsal hall.

Designers who asked not to be named for the unsellable looks were happy to be named for the waistcoat. Spectacle still needs anonymity when it fails to convert. The street cares whether the piece can do maghrib to midnight, same as it did before anyone hired a runway.

Pay the research, skip the theatre at the till

If you love a show, buy what shipped. If you love a photograph, live with the photograph. Confusing the two is how wardrobes fill with garments that need a handler. Pakistani dressing already has enough occasion. It is short of clothes that can walk.

We will keep tracing hero looks into shops. It is a duller beat than sitting front row, and a more honest one. When the conversion rate improves, the street will tell you before the press release does. Until then, shop the research.

Runway is research and theatre. Shop the research. Let the theatre stay in the dark. The street, from Clifton to MM Alam, already knows which looks could walk — and which were only ever going to live on a phone, under rented lights, after the last applause has finally died.
